Girls to the front

In celebration of International Women’s Day 2019, Mt Eliza Fire Brigade is profiling some of our female members who all give their time to serving their community in the fire brigade.

🔥 JAYMIE 🔥

What’s your role at Mt Eliza Fire Brigade?

I’m an operational firefighter and had been for two years now.

Why did you join CFA?

My parents were worried it was too dangerous for me (as any parents would be) and I wanted to prove them wrong.

Why do you feel it’s important for women to be volunteers?

Working hard at a fire then taking off your helmet and seeing the shock on people’s faces that you’re a girl with a ponytail is the most satisfying feeling ever. And because every girl that joins now makes it easier and closer to ‘the norm’ for girls in the future.

How has being part of the Brigade helped you?

It’s challenged me in all the best ways and made me realise that I, along with all the strong women around me, have a lot more potential than I ever thought possible. It has also introduced me to some amazing men who know that I and our female members are forces to be reckoned with – and only help us grow.

What’s your role at Mt Eliza Fire Brigade?

Operational Firefighter – wildfire, structure.

Why did you join CFA?

To face new challenges as part of a fantastic team.

Why do you feel it’s important for women to be volunteers?

Volunteering provides new challenges and experiences that gives to you as much as you give. It’s a wonderful way to engage with our community and be part of a diverse team.

How has being part of the Brigade helped you?

Being a firefighter has given me the opportunity to develop new skills, meet fabulous people and serve our community.

🔥 MADDIE 🔥

What’s your role at Mt Eliza Fire Brigade?

I’m an operation firefighter. I’m also a member of the BST (Brigade Support Team).

Why did you join CFA?

I was new to Mt Eliza and wanted to get involved in the community. I also wanted to be able to sit in the big red truck while the lights and sirens were going.

Why do you feel it’s important for women to be volunteers?

Women can do anything that men can do. Having women in ‘male roles’ helps to break down stereotypes and in turn helps equality across the board, not just for women.

How has being part of the Brigade helped you?

CFA has allowed me to participate in situations I never thought I could handle and come out of them a more confident and braver person. It’s shown me that no matter what, if you need to ask for help don’t be afraid to. People are willing to help you grow and become a stronger and more confident person.

🔥 TYK 🔥

What’s your role at Mt Eliza Fire Brigade?

I am an operational fire fighter and I also drive the trucks.

Why did you join CFA?

I was looking for something fun and challenging to spend my time on. I wanted a something that would be active but also allow me to give back to the community and teach me new skills.

Why do you feel it’s important for women to be volunteers?

Women bring something different to the table compared to an all-male brigade and are just as capable at all the requirements and challenges. Women bring a different dynamic to the role, have different ideas and suggestions that the males sometimes do think of. We have a great ability to rationalise with people and talk to others. Even though the physical requirements can be challenging, the women at Mt Eliza have supported each other and share operational techniques that help in ensuring we achieve, overcome and function at just as high of a standard as male volunteers.

How has being part of the Brigade helped you?

I have gained another family. We all lookout for one another and will do anything to support the members of our brigade. I have developed skills that are transferable into both my employment and everyday life. I have also grown as a person, challenged my boundaries and accomplished things I never even imagined, such as driving a truck or fighting this year’s fires.

🔥 CAITLIN 🔥

What’s your role at Mt Eliza Fire Brigade?

Brigade Community Safety & Engagement Officer, Brigade Support Team member & operational firefighter.

Why did you join CFA?

Having volunteered previously in a role that required one-on-one mentoring, I was looking to join a group that had a wider community impact. I also wanted to be somewhere I could take on completely different challenges and be supported while learning the ropes. As a lifelong Mt Eliza Woodlands resident, CFA’s role in the community is clear to me and I wanted to jump on board.

Why do you feel it’s important for women to be volunteers?

I think it’s important for community organisations to reflect social diversity. Women in CFA bring different perspectives and skills to an area that is traditionally male dominated. We also get to experience physical challenges not often found in other volunteering opportunities, while developing unique knowledge and skills.

How has being part of the Brigade helped you?

Joining the brigade has been a wonderful experience. I’ve met and become friends with some great people from the community, learned many new skills, built my self-confidence, and have numerous leadership opportunities.
