Home Fire Safety Tips For Winter
Did you know there are more house fires in winter as we start using heaters, open fires and electric blankets to keep warm?
These tips can help you stay fire safe this winter:
- Install smoke alarms in all bedrooms and living areas
- Never leave electrical appliances on bedding or soft furnishings
- Turn your electric blanket on 30 minutes before getting into bed and turn off when you get into bed
- Keep electric blankets flat with controls at the side of the bed. Regularly check for broken or worn wiring
- Keep drying clothes and other items at least one metre away from all heating
- Always use a fire screen in front of an open fire
- Don’t overload power boards
- Never leave cooking unattended
- Keep stove top, griller, oven, range hood and cooking areas free from built up grease, dust and oil
- Keep tea towels and paper towels away from cooking, stoves or fires
- Always supervise children in the kitchen. Keep them away from the stove and oven
